The Heartwood Academic Program
At Heartwood Academy, our academic program is intentionally designed to support how students learn, develop, and engage with the world. We integrate rigorous academics with executive function development, regulation support, and individualized instruction so students can build both knowledge and independence.
Our low student-to-teacher ratios and structured, responsive environment allow instruction to be personalized in pacing, presentation, and support. Students grow not only in academic skills, but in confidence, organization, problem-solving, and self-awareness—foundations that extend far beyond the classroom.
Literacy
Students develop reading, writing, and language skills through structured, explicit instruction paired with comprehension, expression, and critical thinking. Instruction is paced and scaffolded to support decoding, fluency, and meaningful engagement with text.
Mathematics
Mathematics instruction builds conceptual understanding alongside procedural skill. Students develop number sense, problem-solving strategies, and mathematical reasoning through structured teaching and supported practice.
Science
Science learning emphasizes inquiry, observation, and real-world connection. Students explore scientific concepts through guided investigation, discussion, and hands-on experiences that support curiosity and understanding.
Social Studies
Social studies develops knowledge of communities, history, and the broader world while strengthening perspective-taking, discussion, and critical thinking. Students connect academic content to civic and social understanding.
Executive Function & Learning Skills
Executive function instruction is embedded across the school day. Students build organization, planning, attention, flexibility, and task-management skills that support academic success and independence.
